Given The Bad Batch’s place in the Star Wars timeline, it can’t help but make several connections to what else is happening in the galaxy far, far away, but what can be emotionally satisfying can also be somewhat distracting.Īt 71 minutes, the first episode of The Bad Batch, titled “Aftermath,” feels more like a movie than an episode of television, although it is officially categorized as the latter. The Bad Batch opens itself up to fascinating new territory: What does it mean for these clones to witness their brethren unquestioningly following orders to commit truly horrific acts?īut for all of its new ground it covers, it’s also caught in some of the same trappings that many of the more recent Star Wars stories have fallen into. Set amid the emerging Galactic Empire and a world that discourages any kind of individualism or thinking outside of the box, it quickly becomes clear that Clone Force 99 won’t fit into the cogs of the Empire’s machine. The Bad Batch’s super-sized premiere introduces a ton of intrigue as it explores an aspect of a Galactic Empire we haven’t seen before.

You have very few black literary agents and editors. To fix it, we would have to start from the top and work our way down. Do you think that is a problem that will be resolved soon? Myall: People constantly talk about the lack of diversity in publishing. I submitted my first novel, Sugar, for ten years before it was published… I believe that if there is something that you really want you should follow it through to the end. When I was about twenty-five I started submitting on a regular basis. She had been published, so I took that as confirmation. One of my professors pulled me aside and said, “I don’t know why you’re not published yet.” That was the first time someone significant, who knew about writing and had made a career in the industry had said something like this to me. I was taking creative writing, poetry and advanced fiction writing. I went back to college for the second time. I submitted to Essence Magazine and the newspaper and I got rejections or no response, so I stopped for a while. JD Myall: Tell us about your publishing journey.īernice L. McFadden takes a break from penning award-winning novels to tell us about her literary journey and her work being optioned for a film. What happens to them? They dumped by boyfriends who go to some rural or small town place, meet someone, and realize “what matters.” This is precisely what happens (and has happened before). The story opens with Nora getting dumped while explaining to the reader that in the world of romantic comedy tropes, she is the icy, business-super-focused New York-loving person. The warmth and affection for romance and the people who love it is palpable. The lead characters, especially Nora, reference romance authors, tropes, archetypes, and specific books, so if you like romance-specific literary cameos, dive on in. It was a very enthusiastic one.Ĭontinuing with the “if this book were a person” motif, this novel would be friends with all the romance readers. If Book Lovers were a person, it would probably be wearing a t-shirt that read, “I am your catnip, Sarah,” and would politely ask if it could hug me.īecause this narrative simultaneously operates on a “telling me a story” level, and on a “people in the book are editing another book” level, and on a “this book knows exactly what kind of book it is” level, I felt extremely safe and welcomed. When the opening pages of a book demonstrate the writer’s deep fluency and familiarity with romance tropes, even by being extremely meta about it, it’s a signal for me that I can trust the book I’m reading to fulfill the expectations I have. But the latest scientific research shows that these phenomena are both real and widespread, and are an unavoidable consequence of the interconnected, entangled physical reality we live in.Īlbert Einstein called entanglement "spooky action at a distance" - the way two objects remain connected through time and space, without communicating in any conventional way, long after their initial interaction has taken place. Many people believe that such "psychic phenomena" are rare talents or divine gifts. Is everything connected? Can we sense what's happening to loved ones thousands of miles away? Why are we sometimes certain of a caller's identity the instant the phone rings? Do intuitive hunches contain information about future events? Is it possible to perceive without the use of the ordinary senses? Women across the republic, rich or poor, plain or beautiful, ancient or young, in the times of my grandmother all owned rebozos-the ones of real Chinese silk sold for prices so precious one asked for them as dowry and took them to the grave as one’s burial shroud, as well as the cheap everyday variety made of cotton and bought at the market. As Lala explains, the rebozo was a garment that defined the culture of Mexico in her grandmother’s time: Soledad is born into a family of rebozo (shawl) makers whose artful creation process includes hand-dying and intricate hand-braiding of the shawls’ fringe. When Lala begins to delve deeply into sensory detail, Soledad repeatedly cautions, “Careful! Just enough, but not too much” (92). For example, when Lala opens her story with the phrase, “It was such a long, long time ago” (92), Soledad says, “It wasn’t that long ago!” (92). The voice of the Awful Grandmother makes frequent interruptions of Lala’s telling, dissatisfied by certain elements. It begins with the coming-of-age story of the Awful Grandmother, Soledad Reyes. The story is narrated by Celaya (Lala), the youngest daughter of the oldest son, and it illustrates the idea that the threads of life are so closely interwoven that every little side story of every member of one's family impacts one. Lala’s narration takes the reader back in time, not only before her own birth, but to the turn of the 20th century. Caramelo is the chronicle of several generations of the Reyes family, Mexicans recently transplanted to Chicago. |
